It all began at a parents group in the spring 2002, where a speaker from a local charity came to tell us about the work they do. I later joined to volunteer on their helpline and began the volunteer's training. I enjoyed this role so much I enrolled at my local college where I embarked on training to become a professional counsellor/ psychotherapist. Over the course of 23 years I've had the good fortune to work in children's centres, local schools, teaching, training and private practice.
Whilst working in children's centres I've had the opportunity to support parents with young children. As all parents would know, raising young children is a rewarding yet challenging journey, and having the right support can make all the difference. Whether it's managing sleepless nights, navigating developmental milestones, or balancing work and family life, parents often need guidance and reassurance. From parenting advice and childcare resources to mental health support and community connections, we found many ways to ease the pressures of raising little ones.
Whilst working in schools I've supported children from the age of 10 upwards. Children and young people often have age development related issues and often move through their struggles with the relevant support. At times other issues such as; family separation, loss, friendships, or neurodiversity may come up. Working through play, games and art etc... in the counselling session has been helpful facilitating a young person's ability to process different experiences and emotions. I have found adolescence do well with a space which is private and just for them to express themselves and explore different ways to approach their struggles.
Working with clients in private practice has been a rewarding opportunity to provide personalised care and support clients with a wide range of difficulties. This setting has allowed me to be flexibile in tailoring services to the individual needs, fostering trust and ensuring a more focused approach to their goals or concerns. In private practice, I have also had the autonomy to establish my own methods, and environment, creating a professional space well suited to my clients. Working closely with clients over a long period of time has developed my capacity to understand outcomes and lead to deeper insights, more effective solutions, and long-term satisfaction for the clients I have the pleasure of serving.
With respect to clinical modalities I draw from; CBT, person centred, attachment theory and solution focused therapy. In plain English this translates to facilitating clients with their goals, helping them 'see the wood for the trees', consider the meaning behind different experiences and providing practical systematic ways to adjust outside of the counselling session and process difficult experiences, along with learning simple techniques to discharge emotional blocks.
